Body aches at night: the short answer
Body aches at night can come from muscle strain, infection, inflammation, medication effects or a condition causing widespread pain. Pain may feel more noticeable when you are still, after a physically demanding day, or when poor sleep makes discomfort harder to tolerate. The timing alone does not identify one cause.
What night-time body aches may mean
Aching in several muscles can occur with a viral illness such as influenza or COVID-19, especially when it comes with fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache or unusual tiredness. Travel or mosquito exposure may make illnesses such as dengue fever or malaria relevant; these need prompt medical assessment if fever or marked weakness is present. Contact with farm animals or unpasteurised animal products can be relevant to brucellosis.
When pain continues without clear exertion, a clinician may consider fibromyalgia, an underactive thyroid, joint or muscle inflammation, or another underlying problem. Fibromyalgia commonly includes widespread pain, poor sleep and fatigue. Hypothyroidism may also cause tiredness, feeling unusually cold, dry skin or constipation. These symptoms overlap, so an examination and medication review are more useful than trying to diagnose yourself from pain alone.
What you can do tonight
Rest the painful area while keeping gentle movement within comfort. A warm shower or heat pack may relax tight muscles; protect your skin from excess heat and do not sleep with a heating device pressed against you. Drink fluids if you have been sweating, vomiting or have a fever. Keep a brief record of where the pain occurs, when it starts, associated symptoms, recent exercise, travel and any new medicines.
Use pain medicine only as directed on its label or by a pharmacist, and check first if you have kidney disease, liver disease, stomach ulcers, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Arrange a clinical review if aches keep disturbing sleep, recur, worsen, limit normal movement, or do not settle after a short period of self-care.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with fever, new weakness, inability to walk, or dark urine with severe muscle pain. Get prompt medical advice for a high or persistent fever, repeated vomiting, a widespread rash, unusual bleeding, yellowing of the skin, or aches after travel to an area where malaria or dengue occurs.
A doctor can examine your muscles and joints, check for infection or nerve symptoms, review medicines and decide whether blood tests or other investigations are needed. Tell them if the pain is localised or widespread and whether it improves with movement or rest.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What causes fit my pattern of pain and night-time symptoms? Could a recent infection, travel, exercise or medicine be contributing? Do I need an examination or tests? What warning signs should make me seek urgent help? Which pain-relief options are suitable with my health conditions and current medicines?

Questions people ask
Can an infection cause body aches at night?
Yes. Influenza and COVID-19 can cause muscle aches alongside fever, chills, cough, sore throat or fatigue. Travel-related infections also need consideration when fever follows travel or mosquito exposure.
When should recurring night-time aches be checked?
Arrange a medical review when aches repeatedly disturb sleep, worsen, limit movement or persist without a clear explanation. Seek urgent help if severe pain comes with dark urine, new weakness, confusion or breathing difficulty.
