Body aches and skin hurts: what to know

Skin tenderness may reflect heightened sensitivity in the nerves rather than a visible skin injury. Influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria and brucellosis can cause body aches with fever or feeling unwell. Fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain and sensitivity, while Hypothyroidism may contribute to muscle discomfort, dry skin and low energy. A local burning sensation, blisters or a stripe of pain may suggest a nerve-related problem and deserves examination.

Choose loose, soft clothing and avoid rubbing or strongly scented products on sensitive areas. Rest, take fluids and use a comfortable room temperature. Do not scratch or apply medicated creams to unexplained areas unless a pharmacist or clinician recommends them. Record visible changes, fever, new products, medicines, travel and the exact distribution of tenderness; photographs can help if a rash changes quickly.

Get urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, widespread blistering or peeling, confusion, fainting, severe headache with a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading purple or red rash. Seek prompt care for fever with a new rash, severe pain, repeated vomiting, or symptoms after relevant travel. Arrange a routine review if sensitivity lasts, spreads, keeps returning or makes ordinary clothing and sleep difficult.

Ask whether the tenderness follows a nerve, infection or pain-sensitivity pattern, whether your skin needs an examination, and whether any medicine could be contributing. Mention fever, rash, travel, allergies and changes in energy or sleep.
