Blurry Vision in One Eye and Headache: What to Know

The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Note whether the change started suddenly, whether it is still present, and whether the eye is painful or red.

A migraine with visual symptoms can cause temporary changes affecting one or both eyes, often alongside a throbbing headache, nausea, or sensitivity to light. Eye strain, an uncorrected vision problem, dry eye, or irritation may also make one eye seem blurred.

Sinus pressure can contribute to headache and discomfort around the eyes, especially with congestion or facial pressure. Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, and a Common Cold can involve these symptoms. Dehydration or Heat Exhaustion may cause headache and visual difficulty with light-headedness, thirst, weakness, or heavy sweating.

Because sudden one-sided visual loss can reflect an urgent eye or brain problem, do not assume the symptom is a migraine without medical assessment when it is new, severe, or persistent.

Stop driving and pause screen use until your sight is clear. Sit somewhere safe, avoid rubbing the eye, and remove contact lenses if they are uncomfortable. If you feel overheated or dehydrated, move to a cool place and sip fluids if you can swallow normally.

Arrange prompt medical advice for a first episode, symptoms that do not settle, or repeated episodes. A clinician may check each eye separately, your pupils, eye pressure, vision, blood pressure, and neurological function.

Seek emergency care now for sudden loss or marked worsening of vision, a severe or unusual headache, weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, or difficulty walking.

Urgent assessment is also needed for severe eye pain, a red eye with blurred vision, halos around lights, vomiting, a recent eye or head injury, or vision changes with fever or a stiff neck. Do not drive yourself if your vision or alertness is impaired.

Ask what might explain the one-sided blur, whether both the eye and nervous system need checking, and which symptoms should prompt emergency help. Tell the clinician when it began, how long it lasted, which eye was affected, and whether closing either eye changed the symptom.

Mention migraine history, contact-lens use, recent illness, heat exposure, reduced fluid intake, medicines, pregnancy, and any weakness, speech change, eye pain, or nausea.
