What should you know about blue swollen lips?

Swelling can follow an allergy, insect sting, injury, infection, dental problem, or cosmetic injection. Sudden swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat may be angioedema, particularly when it follows a food, medicine, or product exposure. Blue colour limited to a bruise or a cold environment has a different pattern from blue lips with breathlessness, chest discomfort, dizziness, or confusion.

A clinician will consider how quickly the change began, whether both lips are affected, and whether the tongue or airway is involved. The colour itself does not identify the cause, so breathing and circulation symptoms matter most.

If the swelling began after a new food, medicine, cosmetic, or sting, stop further exposure and record the time and possible trigger. Do not apply unfamiliar products or take someone else’s medicine. If symptoms are mild and breathing is normal, contact a clinician promptly for advice, especially when swelling is sudden, recurrent, painful, or associated with hives.

Call emergency services immediately for blue lips with trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, chest pain, or inability to speak normally. Urgent assessment is also needed if swelling is rapidly worsening or follows a suspected severe allergic reaction. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or your breathing is affected.
