What should you know about a blue cyst under skin?

A skin cyst is a sac-like lump beneath the surface. It may become red, tender, or blue-purple when inflamed, pressed, or surrounded by bleeding under the skin. A cyst can also have a small central opening or release thick material, although not every lump has these features. Other conditions can resemble a cyst, so a photograph or description is not enough for a definite diagnosis. A clinician considers the lump's depth, mobility, tenderness, growth pattern, and nearby skin.

Do not squeeze, lance, or try to drain the lump at home. Keep the area clean, avoid friction, and use a warm, damp compress for comfort if it is mildly tender and the skin is intact. Make a note of its size and take a dated photograph. A clinician may observe a quiet cyst, inject medication into selected inflamed lesions, drain an abscess when infection is present, or discuss cyst removal when the capsule or repeated symptoms make a procedure useful.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, hot, very painful, increasingly red, or starts draining pus, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Arrange review for a blue lump that does not settle, returns in the same place, bleeds, ulcerates, or feels fixed and hard. Urgent assessment is sensible for severe pain with spreading redness or swelling near the eye, mouth, or genitals.
