What should you know about bloody sputum meaning?

Small red streaks may appear after forceful or repeated coughing because the airways become irritated. Respiratory infections such as acute bronchitis or pneumonia can inflame airway tissue and produce mucus. Bronchiectasis and COPD can also cause recurring blood-stained phlegm. Blood may sometimes come from the nose, throat, or gums and then be cleared with a cough rather than coming from deep in the lungs. The colour, amount, frequency, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician judge the cause.

This symptom does not by itself identify one condition. Notice whether the mucus is pink, bright red, or dark; whether clots are present; and whether you also have fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or night sweats.

Arrange medical advice for any unexplained blood in sputum, especially if it returns. Note when it started, how much you saw, and whether it followed a bout of coughing, a nosebleed, or an illness. Bring a list of medicines, including blood-thinning medicines, and mention smoking or previous lung problems. Do not start leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the examination and cause. A clinician may check your nose, mouth, chest, oxygen level, and sputum history.

Seek emergency help if you are coughing up more than a small streak, the bleeding is continuing, or you feel short of breath, faint, confused, or unusually weak. Urgent assessment is also needed with chest pain, blue or grey lips, a fast worsening illness, or heavy bleeding. Sit upright, avoid driving yourself if unwell, and keep any information about the amount and appearance of the blood for the healthcare team.
