Bloody mastitis in cows: where to get help

Do not use patient advice for human breast inflammation to diagnose or treat livestock. Separate abnormal milk from the human food supply, follow the farm's hygiene and isolation procedures, and contact the herd veterinarian for instructions specific to the animal.

Blood in a cow's milk may occur with severe udder inflammation, injury to udder tissue, or damage within the teat or milk-producing structures. Changes such as clots, watery secretion, udder heat, swelling, tenderness, reduced appetite, or altered behaviour give the veterinarian useful context but do not establish the cause alone.

Human mastitis is a different clinical situation. In a breastfeeding person it can cause a hot, painful, swollen area of the breast and flu-like illness; visible blood in human milk also deserves individual assessment. Veterinary medicines, dosing, milk-withholding instructions, and testing must never be transferred to people.

Identify the affected cow and quarter, prevent the abnormal milk from entering milk intended for people, and use clean handling practices to limit contamination. Record when the change appeared, recent calving or injury, changes in milk, appetite, movement, and any treatment already given.

Follow the veterinarian's directions on examination, sampling, milking, supportive care, and medicines. Do not give leftover antibiotics or human medication: an incorrect product can harm the animal, obscure test results, and create unsafe residues. Observe any stated milk and meat withdrawal requirements supplied with veterinary treatment.

Request urgent veterinary help if the cow is unable to stand, markedly weak, not eating or drinking, breathing abnormally, showing rapidly increasing udder swelling, or producing heavily altered or bloody secretion. Systemic illness can worsen quickly and requires professional examination.

If a person has consumed questionable raw milk and develops fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or significant illness, contact a human healthcare service and mention the exposure. For a breastfeeding person with worsening breast redness, fever, severe pain, or feeling very unwell, seek prompt medical care.

Ask the veterinarian which samples are needed, how to handle milk from the affected cow, whether other animals require monitoring, and what withdrawal instructions apply to any treatment. If your concern is actually about blood in human breast milk, tell a doctor or lactation professional which breast is affected, whether feeding is painful, and whether fever, a lump, skin damage, or redness is present.
