Bloody diarrhea and stomach flu: what to know

Stomach flu usually refers to gastroenteritis, an infection or irritation of the stomach and bowel. Gastroenteritis presents with bloody diarrhea in some people, alongside cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever or reduced appetite. Blood can signal stronger inflammation of the bowel, so the appearance and timing matter. Rotavirus Infection is one possible infectious cause, especially in children, while the symptom alone cannot establish which infection is responsible.

Contact a clinician for advice about bloody stools. Take small, regular sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, and continue light foods if you feel able. Avoid sharing towels, utensils or food, and clean bathroom surfaces because gastroenteritis can spread. Do not use anti-diarrhea medication without professional guidance when blood or fever is present.

Go to urgent care for worsening bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, very little urine, persistent vomiting or difficulty drinking. Dehydration may develop through diarrhea and vomiting; babies, older adults and people with chronic illness need a lower threshold for medical review. A fever with blood in the stool also deserves prompt advice.

Ask whether testing is needed, how to replace lost fluids, and when normal meals or work can resume. Mention recent contact with an unwell person, travel, antibiotics and the duration of symptoms.
