What should you know about bloodshot eyes with cold?

A blocked or runny nose can make the tissues around the eyes feel irritated. Coughing and sneezing may increase watering, while wiping the face can make the white of the eye look red. A cold can occur at the same time as conjunctivitis, especially when redness, watering or discharge becomes prominent. Itchy eyes with sneezing may fit allergic conjunctivitis instead. The eye symptoms need their own assessment if they are severe or unusual.

Use clean tissues, wash your hands after wiping your nose or eyes, and avoid touching the eye. A cool compress can soothe irritation. Clean any crusting gently with clean water and a fresh cloth for each eye. Do not share towels, pillows or cosmetics. Stop contact lenses while the eye is red or producing discharge. Ask a pharmacist before adding eye medicines to cold treatment.

Seek prompt medical care if the eye hurts, light is uncomfortable, vision is blurred or reduced, swelling is marked, or an injury or chemical splash occurred. Contact-lens wearers with redness should get advice promptly. Use urgent services for severe or quickly worsening symptoms.
