What should you know about a bloodshot eye on one side?

One-sided redness can happen after rubbing, dust, smoke, a splash, or a small surface blood vessel breaking. Conjunctivitis may begin in one eye and later affect the other, with watering, crusting, or discharge. Allergy more often affects both eyes, although exposure may be uneven. A red patch with little discomfort differs from diffuse redness with pain, swelling, or light sensitivity.

Do not rub the eye. Remove contact lenses and eye makeup, wash your hands, and use a cool clean compress for irritation. If dust or a mild irritant entered the eye, rinse with clean water. Avoid sharing towels and do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid drops. If symptoms follow an injury or chemical splash, rinse continuously and seek urgent advice.

Get urgent assessment for reduced vision, severe pain, strong light sensitivity, a penetrating injury, chemical exposure, or a red eye with severe headache and nausea. Contact lens wearers should seek same-day advice for a red eye. A painless red patch can still be reviewed if it recurs, spreads, or does not begin to clear.
