Blood work labs: what to expect

A trained collector confirms your details, cleans the skin and takes blood from a vein into labelled tubes. Different tubes support different tests, such as blood counts, hormones, glucose, kidney markers or infection checks. The laboratory compares measurements with its reference range, then sends a report to the requesting clinician. A flagged result needs clinical context rather than an instant conclusion.

Check instructions about fasting, morning appointments, exercise and medicines before you attend. Drink water unless you were told otherwise, wear clothing that allows access to your arm, and mention a history of fainting or difficult blood draws. Keep the report for your records and book a discussion if you are unsure what any result means.

After collection, seek help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness or fainting that does not quickly improve. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness or new confusion, whether or not blood work is planned.

Ask what each requested test is checking, whether preparation is needed, when results will be ready, and which findings require a follow-up appointment.
