Blood while vomiting during pregnancy

Pregnancy nausea and vomiting can irritate the throat or food pipe, leaving red streaks in vomit after repeated retching. Dark material resembling coffee grounds may represent older blood and needs urgent review. Blood is not a normal pregnancy symptom to dismiss. Infection, gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, or another digestive condition may also cause vomiting and pain. The amount and colour of blood, abdominal symptoms, ability to drink, and stage of pregnancy help a clinician decide what assessment is needed.

Contact your maternity team, obstetric clinician, or urgent care service the same day. Keep a note of the blood’s appearance, the number of vomiting episodes, fluid intake, urine output, and any prescribed medicines. If you can swallow safely, take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink recommended by your clinician. Do not start anti-sickness, pain, or herbal medicines without pregnancy-specific advice. Have someone accompany you if you are weak or dizzy.

Seek emergency help for heavy or repeated blood, fainting, severe dizziness, confusion, severe abdominal or chest pain, difficulty breathing, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. A high fever, severe headache with neck stiffness, or feeling suddenly much worse also needs urgent care. If you are later in pregnancy, report reduced fetal movement to your maternity service immediately.

Ask whether you need fluids, blood tests, pregnancy-safe anti-sickness treatment, or observation. Clarify which medicines and drinks are suitable, how to recognise dehydration, and when to return if vomiting or bleeding continues. Share any history of ulcers, liver disease, digestive problems, or medicines that affect bleeding.
