Blood when you cough: what to know

Coughing may bring up mucus with a red line, pink foam, or more obvious blood. Irritation after a cold or acute bronchitis is one possible explanation. Allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, asthma, and other airway conditions can also trigger coughing or throat irritation. The symptom does not identify its cause by itself. Note whether the blood is fresh or dark, whether it is mixed through mucus, and whether the cough began after an infection. These details help a clinician decide how quickly you need examination.

Contact a clinician for new coughing blood, even after a minor illness, and seek review if it returns. Record the colour, amount, timing, and mucus. Avoid smoking and strenuous activity while waiting. Bring a list of medicines that affect clotting. Include inhalers, recent antibiotics, and any medicine taken for pain or fever.

Call emergency services for ongoing bleeding, a large amount of blood, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue lips. Get urgent help for a rapidly worsening cough with fever or marked weakness. Do not drive if dizzy or breathless.
