What should you know about blood vomiting in kidney disease?

Kidney disease does not usually cause blood in vomit directly. A stomach or oesophageal bleed, forceful retching, infection, or medicine-related irritation may be responsible. Reduced kidney function can affect platelet activity and the body's handling of medicines, while vomiting can disturb fluid and salt balance. People receiving dialysis may also use medicines that influence clotting. The source and severity cannot be judged from colour alone.

Get emergency medical help now and tell the team whether you have chronic kidney disease, dialysis, a transplant, or a fluid restriction. Do not drink large amounts to replace losses, and do not take ibuprofen, aspirin, or leftover medicine unless prescribed for this situation. Bring your medicine list and dialysis schedule.

Any vomiting of blood warrants urgent care. Call emergency services for faintness, confusion, severe weakness, little or no urine, breathing difficulty, chest pain, repeated bleeding, or black stools. Do not wait for the next dialysis session or routine kidney review.
