What should you know about blood vomiting after alcohol consumption?

Repeated retching can inflame the food pipe or cause a small tear, while alcohol can irritate the stomach lining. A larger bleed may come from an ulcer or enlarged veins related to liver disease. Bright-red blood suggests fresh bleeding; brown or coffee-ground material can mean blood has stayed in the stomach. The symptom may occur with abdominal pain, dizziness, or black stool. Food poisoning, gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, and other conditions can cause vomiting but do not make blood safe to ignore.

Stop drinking alcohol and seek urgent medical assessment. Call emergency services if you feel faint, confused, very weak, or short of breath, or if bleeding continues. Do not drive yourself after drinking or while unwell. Keep any prescribed medicine list with you, avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a clinician advises them, and do not try to settle the symptom with more alcohol. If possible, note the colour and amount of blood and whether retching came first.

Emergency care is needed for black, sticky stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, cold or clammy skin, a fast heartbeat, fainting, or increasing drowsiness. These can indicate blood loss or another acute illness. A single streak after forceful retching still deserves same-day clinical advice, particularly if you have known liver disease or take medicines that affect clotting.

Ask whether you need tests to find the bleeding source, whether alcohol has affected your liver, and which painkillers are safe. Ask for support if stopping alcohol feels difficult or withdrawal symptoms may be a concern.
