What should you know about blood through nose?

The delicate lining inside the nose can bleed after forceful blowing, picking, an injury, dry air, or irritation from smoke and sprays. A cold or Allergic Rhinitis can inflame the lining and make a small vessel easier to disturb. Blood may run from one nostril or down the throat. The appearance of blood alone cannot identify the cause.

Mention any medicines that affect clotting, previous nose injuries, frequent episodes, or bleeding from other sites. A clinician may examine the nose and check your general health before deciding whether further tests are needed.

Sit upright and lean slightly forward so blood does not collect in the throat. Breathe through your mouth and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while staying calm. Spitting out blood is safer than swallowing it. Once bleeding has stopped, avoid forceful blowing, heavy exertion, and picking the nose for a while. A humidifier or a clinician-recommended saline product may help when dryness is a trigger.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant head or facial injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or does not settle with firm pressure. Arrange a medical review for repeated nosebleeds, easy bruising, or bleeding while taking a prescribed clot-affecting medicine. Children, older adults, and people with a bleeding disorder may need a lower threshold for assessment.
