Blood tests for hair loss in men

Short answer
Blood tests are not automatically needed for every man with hair loss; they are selected when the history or examination suggests an underlying medical contributor.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- History and scalp examination guide the choice of tests.
- Typical use
- Targeted testing can look for medical contributors to diffuse shedding.
- Caution
- Do not self-treat with iron or hormones based on hair fall alone.
The short answer
A receding hairline and gradual thinning at the crown often have a recognisable pattern, whereas sudden diffuse shedding, patchy loss or systemic symptoms may justify targeted testing. The result is interpreted alongside the scalp examination rather than used as a stand-alone diagnosis.
What testing can clarify
Depending on the clinical clues, a clinician may consider a full blood count, iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin status or other targeted measures. These can identify anaemia, low iron stores or thyroid disturbance that may accompany diffuse shedding. Hormone tests are not routine for a typical male-pattern distribution and are chosen when there are additional signs of endocrine illness.
A normal blood panel does not rule out common pattern hair loss, scalp inflammation, alopecia areata or physical damage to hairs. Conversely, a borderline laboratory value does not prove that it caused the shedding; symptoms, examination and trends determine relevance.
Preparing for assessment
Write down when shedding began, whether it is patchy or diffuse, recent illness, weight change, dietary restriction, new medicines and family history. Bring photographs showing the hairline over time and a complete supplement list, because high-dose products can affect both health and test interpretation.
Have tests chosen by a qualified clinician instead of ordering a broad panel without context. Do not begin iron or hormone products solely because of hair fall; unnecessary supplementation can cause harm and may obscure the actual explanation.
When medical review should be prompt
Arrange timely assessment if loss is sudden, forms smooth patches, affects eyebrows or body hair, or occurs with scalp pain, pus, heavy scaling or scarring. Fatigue, unexplained weight change, temperature intolerance, palpitations or symptoms of anaemia also support medical review. A rapidly inflamed scalp or spreading infection needs same-day care.
Questions that make testing useful
Ask what pattern the examination suggests, which specific tests would answer a clinical question, and how an abnormal result would change treatment. Clarify whether scalp imaging, a fungal test or a biopsy would be more informative than additional blood work.

Questions people ask
Does every man with thinning hair need a thyroid test?
No. Thyroid testing is generally selected when the shedding pattern, symptoms or medical history makes thyroid dysfunction a reasonable possibility.
Can normal blood results still occur with male-pattern hair loss?
Yes. Common pattern hair loss can occur despite normal routine blood results because diagnosis depends mainly on its distribution and clinical features.
Should testosterone be checked for a receding hairline?
Not routinely. A clinician considers hormone testing when other features suggest an endocrine disorder, not simply because a typical pattern is present.
