What should you know about blood test to check liver?

A liver panel may include enzymes, bilirubin, albumin and clotting-related measurements. Results can be influenced by medicines, alcohol, infection, muscle injury, weight-related liver change and problems in the bile ducts. An unusual value does not identify a single diagnosis, and a normal panel cannot answer every liver question. Your clinician interprets the pattern, symptoms and examination together.

Tell the clinician about prescribed medicines, painkillers, supplements, alcohol use, previous liver problems and recent illness. Ask whether you should fast or take your usual medicines before the sample. Do not stop treatment without advice. Depending on the pattern, follow-up may include a repeat blood test, an ultrasound or tests for a particular infection or immune condition.

Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for dark urine, pale stools, persistent itching, swelling of the abdomen or ongoing nausea, particularly after starting a new medicine.
