What should you know about blood test to check cholesterol?

The report may include total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. These values are interpreted together with factors such as age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney health and family history. Cholesterol itself usually causes no symptoms, so a test is a way to assess risk rather than an explanation for a particular pain or sensation. One result is not the whole picture.

Check with the testing service whether fasting is required; follow its instructions rather than changing your normal medicines. Tell your clinician about prescribed treatments, supplements, pregnancy and relevant family history. Bring previous results if available. Follow-up might involve food and activity changes, another test, or treatment based on your overall risk. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

A cholesterol result is not an emergency by itself. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, sudden severe breathlessness, collapse or stroke-like symptoms such as facial drooping, new weakness or trouble speaking. Arrange routine review if you have a new result or a strong family history of early heart disease.
