What should you know about blood test intolerance?

Some people react to the sight of blood, the needle, pain, or the setting. Others experience a vasovagal response: the nervous system briefly lowers heart rate and blood pressure, causing warmth, sweating, nausea, blurred vision, or faintness. Anxiety and a previous difficult experience can intensify symptoms, but they do not mean the test is unsafe for you.

Tell reception and the phlebotomist what has happened before. Ask to lie down, look away, use slow breathing, and bring water if permitted. Applied-tension exercises may help people who faint, but ask staff to demonstrate them. Do not skip required preparation; check whether fasting is needed and arrange support if you have fainted previously.

Tell staff immediately if you become clammy, light-headed, nauseated, or develop tunnel vision; they can stop and position you safely. Seek medical help after a faint if you hit your head, have chest pain, difficulty breathing, prolonged confusion, seizure-like movements, or do not recover promptly. Repeated fainting away from blood tests also deserves assessment.

Ask whether the test can be done lying down, how to handle fasting medicines, whether a smaller number of samples is possible, and what support is available if you feel faint.
