What should you know about low HDL on a blood test?

HDL helps transport cholesterol away from tissues. A lower result can occur alongside higher LDL, non-HDL cholesterol, or triglycerides, but the meaning depends on the complete report and factors such as blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney health, and family history. It often causes no symptoms, so the blood result is a risk-assessment clue rather than a diagnosis.

Book a routine review of the full lipid profile. Regular activity, stopping tobacco, choosing unsaturated fats in place of heavily processed foods, and managing weight if advised can support lipid health. Follow prescribed treatment and ask before using a supplement marketed to raise HDL; changing one number is not the sole treatment goal.

Low HDL itself is not an emergency symptom. Seek emergency care for chest pressure, sudden severe breathlessness, collapse, or new weakness or speech difficulty.
