Can a blood test detect trichomoniasis?

The laboratory looks for Trichomonas vaginalis or its genetic material in a sample from the genital or urinary tract. A clinic may offer blood tests at the same visit to check for other sexually transmitted infections, but those results do not confirm or exclude trichomoniasis.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. It may cause vaginal discharge, itching, irritation, discomfort during urination, or pain during sex, yet infection can also be present without noticeable symptoms. Symptoms cannot identify the organism reliably because other infections and vaginal conditions can feel similar.

A clinician chooses the sample type according to local laboratory methods and your anatomy. If you were told that a blood panel was normal, check whether a specific swab or urine test for trichomoniasis was also performed.

Arrange sexual health or gynaecology testing if a partner has been diagnosed or you have compatible symptoms. Tell the clinician about recent sexual contact, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, allergies, and medicines, as these details guide sample collection and treatment.

If the result is positive, take the prescribed antimicrobial medicine exactly as directed. Current sexual partners may also need evaluation and treatment to prevent passing the infection back and forth. Avoid sexual contact until you and relevant partners have completed the advised treatment period and the clinician says it is appropriate to resume.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, worsening lower abdominal or pelvic pain, vomiting, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell. During pregnancy, contact your maternity team promptly about pelvic pain, bleeding, leaking fluid, or reduced fetal movement.

Otherwise, book a clinic visit soon if discharge, itching, painful urination, or pain during sex persists. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the medicine and dose need to match the diagnosed infection.

Ask which sample was collected, whether it specifically checks for trichomoniasis, when results are expected, and whether other infection tests are appropriate. If treatment is prescribed, confirm how to take it, possible medicine interactions, how partners should access care, and whether repeat testing is advised.
