What early-pregnancy spotting may represent

Small amounts of pink, red, or brown blood may come from a cervix made more sensitive by pregnancy, particularly after sex or an examination. Infection or a cervical growth can also cause contact bleeding. Sometimes blood collects near the pregnancy and is seen on ultrasound.

Bleeding may also accompany an early pregnancy loss or an ectopic pregnancy. The colour or amount cannot by itself identify the cause, and symptoms may change. Clinicians interpret the bleeding alongside pain, examination findings, pregnancy hormone tests, and ultrasound when indicated.

Steps to take now

Contact your maternity service, obstetric clinician, or early-pregnancy service and describe the flow and any pain. Use a pad rather than a tampon so you can monitor the amount. Record when bleeding started, its colour, whether clots or tissue appeared, and whether you feel dizzy, feverish, or unwell.

Follow the service's advice about activity and sex. There is no need to blame ordinary movement for the bleeding. Depending on the pregnancy stage and symptoms, you may be offered an ultrasound, serial blood tests, examination, or infection testing. One early scan may be inconclusive if the pregnancy is too small to visualise, so follow-up can be necessary.

Emergency warning signs

Go for immediate assessment if bleeding is heavy or rapidly increasing, pain is severe or mainly on one side, or you have shoulder-tip pain. Fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, breathlessness, confusion, or collapse also require emergency help because they can signal internal bleeding or substantial blood loss.

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, or worsening pelvic pain. If you are Rh negative, tell the clinician assessing the bleed because this may affect care according to pregnancy stage and local guidance.

What to clarify with your care team

Ask what the examination or scan shows, whether hormone blood tests need repeating, and exactly which changes should prompt emergency care. Also ask when follow-up will occur if the pregnancy location or development cannot yet be confirmed.

Does brown spotting mean the pregnancy is ending?

Brown blood is often older blood, but colour cannot determine how a pregnancy is developing. Your care service can decide whether follow-up or assessment is needed.
