What can cause blood spots on the skin?

Friction, pressure, shaving, scratching, and pinching can injure small vessels or make a pimple-like bump bleed. Folliculitis may present with itchy or tender bumps centred around hairs. A blood blister is raised, whereas blood beneath intact skin often looks flat and does not fade with pressure.

Many scattered spots without a clear injury can occur when inflammation damages small vessels or when platelets and clotting do not work normally. Some medicines and supplements can make bleeding easier. The marks alone cannot identify which mechanism is responsible.

Note the first location, speed of spread, pressure-fading, and any itch, pain, fever, bruising, or other bleeding. Review recent illnesses and medicine changes, including non-prescription pain relievers and supplements, but do not stop prescribed treatment without clinical guidance.

Protect traumatised skin, avoid picking, and use clean gauze for surface bleeding. Recurrent or unexplained marks should be assessed rather than repeatedly covered with cosmetic products, because the surrounding symptoms can change the appropriate next step.

Seek emergency care when new non-fading red or purple spots appear with fever, confusion, a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, faintness, or severe illness. Uncontrolled bleeding, blood in vomit, urine, or stool, or extensive unexplained bruising also requires immediate attention.

Prompt review is sensible when spots multiply rapidly, begin after a medicine change, or accompany recurrent gum or nose bleeding. Increasing redness, heat, pus, or red streaking suggests a skin infection that needs timely care.

Ask whether the pattern suggests trauma, follicle inflammation, a vessel problem, or altered clotting; whether medicines should be reviewed; and whether skin examination or blood tests could distinguish among those possibilities.
