Blood spots in vomit during pregnancy

Contact your maternity team or urgent medical service now, even when only a small streak is visible. Pregnancy-related nausea may explain the vomiting, but it does not by itself establish where the blood came from.

Repeated vomiting can inflame the throat or produce a small tear near the junction of the food pipe and stomach. Swallowed blood from the nose, gums, or mouth can also reappear during vomiting.

Bleeding from an ulcer or another part of the upper digestive tract is another possibility. Bright red blood may be fresh, while dark grainy material may be altered blood; neither appearance can confirm the cause without assessment.

Tell the maternity team how often you have vomited, what the blood looked like, and whether you can keep fluids down or are passing urine normally. Include abdominal or chest pain, dizziness, fever, black stools, nosebleeds, and gum bleeding.

Do not take an extra dose of any medicine to settle the symptoms unless a clinician advises it. Have your medicine list available, including aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers, anticoagulants, supplements, and prescribed pregnancy treatments.

Call emergency services for heavy or repeated bleeding, dark grainy vomit, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, severe chest or abdominal pain, black stools, a racing heartbeat, or cold clammy skin.

Urgent assessment is also needed when vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down, urine becomes very scant, or dizziness and marked weakness develop. Avoid driving if you feel unwell; ask another adult to stay with you.

Ask how to manage ongoing nausea safely, whether you need checks for dehydration or anaemia, and when to restart food and fluids. Confirm which painkillers and anti-sickness medicines are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy.
