Blood spots after 10 days of periods: what to know

A red or purple skin mark can form when a pimple is inflamed, rubbed, squeezed, or scratched and a tiny surface vessel breaks. A spot containing blood may look darker than a usual pimple and can crust as it heals. Hormonal shifts around menstruation can coincide with acne flares, but the timing alone does not identify the cause. Other possibilities include an irritated hair follicle, a bite, or a mark that is not acne. If the blood is coming from the vagina rather than the skin, this is post-period bleeding and should be discussed with a clinician, particularly when it is new, recurrent, or accompanied by pelvic pain.

Wash the area gently, pat it dry, and avoid squeezing, shaving over it, or applying harsh scrubs. If the skin is open, use light pressure with clean gauze until bleeding stops; then keep the surface clean. Take a clear photograph and note the location, size, tenderness, drainage, and whether new spots appear. Do not apply an acne medicine to broken skin without checking its instructions. Arrange a routine review if the same spot repeatedly bleeds, fails to settle, becomes firm, or changes in colour, border, or shape. For vaginal bleeding, record when it started, how it compares with your usual flow, and any medicines or contraception that may be relevant.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that is heavy or difficult to control, faintness, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, or a rapidly enlarging skin lesion. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding is vaginal, occurs after sex, returns between periods, or happens with pregnancy concerns. A dermatologist or primary-care clinician can examine a persistent bleeding skin spot and decide whether it needs a closer assessment. Emergency care is appropriate for severe weakness, collapse, or breathing difficulty.
