What should you know about blood pressure high in the morning?

Short answer
Morning blood pressure can be temporarily elevated or reflect an underlying pattern, so repeated readings should be reviewed with a healthcare professional.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Your log and medicine timing
Why morning readings may be higher
The body becomes more alert after waking, and movement, stress, caffeine, nicotine, a full bladder, or a hurried measurement can raise a result. A high reading may also reflect hypertension that is not well controlled overnight. Sleep disruption, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, kidney disease, weight, and the timing or missed doses of medicines may be relevant. The reading describes pressure at that moment; it does not by itself explain why it happened or prove that a symptom has a particular cause.
How to check it
Measure before breakfast, caffeine, nicotine, and exercise when possible. Sit quietly with your arm supported, use the correct cuff size on bare skin, and take readings as directed by your clinician. Keep a written log for several days, including the time, symptoms, sleep, and medicine timing. Avoid repeatedly checking in a worried rush, because that can make interpretation harder. Never alter prescribed blood-pressure medicine without advice.
When morning symptoms are urgent
Get emergency help for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, new confusion, sudden trouble speaking, sudden weakness or numbness, or a severe unusual headache. Such symptoms may occur with Stroke, Transient Ischaemic Attack, Angina, or Heart Failure and need urgent assessment. Without warning symptoms, arrange a clinical review when morning readings are repeatedly high or rising.
Questions to take along
Should I change the time of any medicine? Would ambulatory monitoring show what happens during sleep? Should I be assessed for sleep apnoea, kidney problems, or other contributors?

Questions people ask
Can rushing after waking affect a reading?
Yes. Activity and stress can affect the result, so quiet rest helps make it more useful.
Should I take an extra dose for a high morning reading?
Only if a clinician has given you a specific plan; do not self-adjust treatment.
