Blood in vomit after drinking alcohol

Contact emergency services immediately if blood is still coming up, the amount is more than a streak, the vomit looks like coffee grounds, or you feel faint, confused, breathless, cold, clammy, or severely unwell. Have someone stay with you and do not drive.

Repeated retching can create a small tear near the junction of the oesophagus and stomach. Alcohol can also irritate the stomach lining, worsen an ulcer, or contribute to bleeding from enlarged veins in people with advanced liver disease. Swallowed blood from the nose or mouth is another possibility.

Bleeding is also a possible presentation of oesophageal cancer or stomach cancer, although vomiting blood after drinking has several non-cancer causes. A clinician needs to assess the direction and volume of bleeding, your circulation, liver history, medicines, and other symptoms rather than judging the cause from timing alone.

Stop drinking alcohol and seek urgent medical advice now. If safe, record the colour and approximate amount of blood, how many vomiting episodes occurred, and whether there is black stool, abdominal pain, chest pain, dizziness, or difficulty swallowing. Tell the clinician when you last drank and roughly how much.

Share all medicines and supplements you use, particularly blood thinners, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory pain medicines. Do not take more alcohol to settle shaking or nausea. If you drink heavily most days, say so openly because sudden withdrawal can need supervised care.

An ambulance is appropriate for a large or continuing bleed, fainting, marked weakness, confusion, a fast heartbeat, trouble breathing, severe chest or abdominal pain, black tar-like stool, or inability to keep awake. These signs can reflect major blood loss, a tear, or another acute complication.

Even a small streak after forceful retching deserves same-day clinical advice, especially if it happens again. Do not assume the alcohol explains away the bleeding.

You might ask whether the pattern suggests a tear, stomach irritation, an ulcer, or enlarged veins; whether you need blood tests, liver checks, or endoscopy; and how to manage your regular medicines. Also ask for help with alcohol withdrawal or reducing alcohol safely if that applies to you.
