Blood in phlegm after vomiting

Forceful retching can irritate the throat and small blood vessels, leaving a streak in saliva or mucus. Blood may also come from the nose or gums and be noticed after being sick. Vomiting illnesses such as Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning can cause repeated retching and dehydration. Less commonly, bleeding may be from the upper digestive tract rather than the airways; dark material that resembles coffee grounds, black stools, or significant weakness is concerning. The vomiting symptom itself may be related to conditions such as Migraine or Gallstones, depending on the wider pattern.

Stop strenuous activity and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. Avoid alcohol and medicines that can irritate the stomach unless a clinician has prescribed them. Keep a note of the number of vomiting episodes, the colour and amount of blood, abdominal pain, fever, and your urine output. Contact a clinician promptly if vomiting continues or you cannot retain fluids.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood, coffee-ground material, black stools, severe abdominal or chest pain, faintness, confusion, cold clammy skin, or difficulty breathing. Urgent assessment is also needed when you cannot keep fluids down, have signs of severe dehydration, or develop a severe headache with a stiff neck.
