Blood in mucus from the throat

A dry nose, postnasal drainage, inflamed gums, or a small sore in the mouth can add blood to mucus. Acid reflux may irritate the throat and lead to frequent clearing. A common cold, influenza, COVID-19, strep throat, tonsillitis, or glandular fever can cause throat inflammation; these illnesses may also bring fever, swollen glands, pain on swallowing, or fatigue. The presence of blood does not by itself identify one condition. Note whether it is fresh red streaking, whether it follows brushing or nose blowing, and whether swallowing or breathing is becoming harder.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and vaping, and choose soft foods if the throat is tender. Do not scrape the throat or share drinks while you have an infectious illness. Check your mouth and gums for a visible source, and record fever, pain, rash, or swollen neck glands. Arrange medical advice if the blood recurs, throat pain is worsening, or you cannot explain where it started. Use only recommended medicines and follow local testing advice when infection is suspected.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, blue lips, fainting, or heavy bleeding. Seek same-day care for high fever with severe throat pain, dehydration, marked weakness, or repeated blood. Keep upright while waiting for help if lying down makes breathing or swallowing harder.

Ask whether the blood appears to come from your nose, mouth, throat, or chest, and whether you need a throat examination or infection test. Ask which pain-relief options fit your medicines and when worsening swallowing requires urgent review.
