Blood in mucus from the throat during pregnancy

Pregnancy-related nasal congestion, dryness, allergies, or repeated throat clearing can make small surface vessels bleed. A cold, acute bronchitis, or asthma flare may add coughing and mucus. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. Blood that starts in the nose may slide backward and be noticed when you spit. These explanations do not replace an examination: describe the shade and amount, whether it follows vomiting or coughing, and any fever, wheeze, chest discomfort, dizziness, or reduced activity.

Keep hydrated, avoid smoke and strong irritants, and consider gentle saline nasal care if your maternity clinician has said it is suitable. Do not use decongestants, cough remedies, herbal products, or leftover antibiotics without checking with your obstetric or primary-care team. Record when the blood appears and any medicine you take, especially aspirin or anticoagulants. Contact your maternity team or clinician if it happens again or does not settle.

Call emergency services for heavy or ongoing bleeding, trouble breathing, severe chest pain, collapse, blue lips, or marked weakness. Seek same-day medical advice for fever with worsening symptoms, new breathlessness, coughing blood repeatedly, or bleeding while taking a blood thinner. Pregnancy is a reason to discuss new symptoms promptly, not a reason to assume the cause.

Ask which nasal or reflux measures fit your pregnancy, whether a medicine could increase bleeding, and whether your lungs and throat need checking. Also ask who to contact after hours if the blood returns.
