What blood in a cough may indicate

A cold, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, or repeated hard coughing may irritate the upper passages. Acute bronchitis can inflame the breathing tubes. Asthma may cause cough and airway irritation, while bronchiectasis can be associated with recurring mucus and blood. Bronchiolitis is mainly a condition of young children. Chronic cough can keep fragile lining irritated. These are possibilities, not conclusions from a symptom alone.

The clinician will consider whether blood is streaked through phlegm, appears separately, or follows bleeding from the nose or mouth. Fever, breathlessness, chest pain, wheezing, duration, smoking exposure, and clotting medicines also change the assessment.

Note when the bleeding started, how often it occurs, its colour and approximate amount, and what the mucus looks like. Avoid smoking, vaping, and vigorous throat clearing. Seek a medical assessment if the cause is unclear, the symptom returns, or the cough persists. Bring a list of medicines and relevant lung history.

Emergency care is needed for a large amount of blood, ongoing bleeding, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue lips. Arrange prompt review for recurrent blood, worsening fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or a cough that does not settle. Bleeding disorders and anticoagulants lower the threshold for urgent advice.

Ask what source is most likely after examination, whether you need chest testing, and whether any medicine or activity should be avoided while the cause is being assessed. Clarify which symptoms mean you should attend emergency care.
