Blood in cough during pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can make nasal tissue more prone to congestion and bleeding, and a small amount may drain into the throat before being coughed out. Allergic Rhinitis, Common Cold, and Acute Bronchitis can inflame the upper or lower airway. Acid Reflux may also trigger throat clearing and cough. These possibilities do not prove where the blood began, so describe whether you had a nosebleed and whether the material was mucus or mostly blood.

Asthma symptoms can change during pregnancy and need an agreed treatment plan. Bronchiectasis or Chronic Cough may require individual follow-up. Do not attribute new breathlessness, chest pain, or bleeding to pregnancy alone.

Contact your maternity team, midwife, or doctor for advice about any repeated blood-stained cough. Use only medicines, lozenges, or sprays that your pregnancy clinician or pharmacist has confirmed are suitable. Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoke and vaping, and use gentle nose care rather than forceful blowing. Record the timing, colour, amount, temperature, cough severity, and any reduced ability to breathe.

Seek emergency help for more than small streaks of blood, trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, confusion, or rapid worsening. Get prompt advice if you have a fever, one-sided leg swelling or pain, or feel suddenly unwell. Take your pregnancy details and medicine list with you.

Ask whether the blood is more consistent with the nose, throat, or lungs; which treatments are appropriate at your stage of pregnancy; and whether your asthma, reflux, allergy, or airway history changes the plan. Ask what symptoms should send you directly to emergency care.
