Why might blood appear from the mouth after coughing?

A hard cough can irritate the throat or make a dry gum bleed. Blood from a nosebleed may run backwards and appear after coughing or clearing the throat. If blood is mixed with phlegm, an inflamed airway from Acute Bronchitis or another respiratory problem is possible. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat and promote repeated throat clearing. Look for clues: frothy or mucus-mixed material suggests the breathing passages, while bright blood on tissue or around the gums points toward a surface source. These clues cannot confirm the cause alone.

Rinse your mouth gently with water and inspect for a cut, nosebleed, or gum bleeding without repeatedly scraping the area. Rest your voice, drink fluids, and avoid smoke and alcohol while the throat settles. Note whether the blood appeared before, during, or after the cough and whether you had fever, wheeze, or chest pain. Contact a clinician when the cough continues, the bleeding returns, or you take medicine that affects clotting.

Go to emergency care for a large or continuing amount of blood, trouble breathing, severe chest pain, faintness, confusion, or a blue or grey appearance. Seek prompt assessment after a significant injury, choking event, or sudden worsening. Sit upright and avoid lying flat if blood or breathing symptoms are active.
