What does blood from a cough mean?

Small streaks may appear when forceful coughing scratches inflamed tissue in the nose, throat, or breathing tubes. A chest infection such as Acute Bronchitis can inflame the airway and bring blood-stained mucus. Asthma, Bronchiectasis, and Chronic Cough can also involve persistent airway irritation. Blood may instead come from a nosebleed or gum and mix with saliva, so notice whether it was brought up with phlegm or merely seen in the mouth. The appearance, amount, recurrence, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician decide what examination or testing is needed.

Stop smoking or vaping for now, avoid strenuous activity, and keep track of when the bleeding occurred, its colour, and whether it was streaked through mucus or separate. Do not take a cough suppressant or blood-thinning medicine without checking with a clinician. Arrange medical advice promptly if the symptom returns, your cough persists, or you have fever, wheezing, chest discomfort, or unexplained weakness. Bring a list of medicines and describe any recent infection, nosebleed, or choking episode.

Seek emergency care if you are coughing up more than a small trace, the bleeding does not settle, or you feel short of breath, faint, confused, or have severe chest pain. Urgent assessment is also needed when blood follows a chest injury or occurs with a very fast heartbeat. Do not drive yourself if breathing is difficult or you feel light-headed.
