What should you know about blood cupping therapy?

Short answer

Blood cupping uses suction over small skin cuts and carries bleeding, infection, scarring, and fainting risks.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

It is different from dry cupping, which does not intentionally break the skin. Some people seek it for muscle discomfort, but it should not replace assessment of persistent or severe pain.

What blood cupping involves

A practitioner places cups on the skin to create suction, makes shallow cuts or punctures, and uses suction again so a small amount of blood enters the cup. Because the skin barrier is opened, clean technique and sterile, single-use blades are central safety issues.

Circular bruising, tenderness, and temporary skin discolouration can follow suction. Blood cupping does not identify the cause of back pain, spasm, weakness, or numbness, so those symptoms may still need a clinical examination.

Before and after a session

Tell the practitioner about bleeding disorders, anaemia, fainting, pregnancy, skin disease, allergies, medicines that reduce clotting, and any immune-system problem. Avoid treatment over infected, broken, inflamed, or poorly healing skin. Confirm that gloves are used and that blades and blood-contaminated items are disposed of safely.

Afterward, follow the wound-care instructions, keep the sites clean, and avoid picking at them. For musculoskeletal pain, continue any agreed movement or rehabilitation plan unless your clinician advises otherwise.

When to seek medical care

Get prompt medical care for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, pus, fever, worsening pain, marked dizziness, or fainting. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, chest pain, new weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

A clinician should also assess pain that began after a significant injury, repeatedly wakes you, or is accompanied by unexplained illness. These features matter independently of whether cupping was performed.

Questions to discuss

Ask what may be causing your pain, whether cupping could interfere with your medicines or skin condition, and which treatments address the underlying problem. If you still plan to proceed, ask how the practitioner prevents blood-borne infection and manages bleeding or fainting.

Questions people ask

Is blood cupping the same as dry cupping?

No. Both use suction, but blood or wet cupping includes small cuts or punctures, while dry cupping leaves the skin intact.

Can blood cupping replace physiotherapy or a medical assessment?

No. It does not diagnose why pain is occurring or restore strength and movement by itself. Persistent, severe, or neurologically associated pain needs appropriate assessment.

What should I check before choosing a practitioner?

Check that the practitioner is appropriately licensed, uses gloves and sterile single-use blades, cleans the skin, and has a clear process for sharps and blood-contaminated waste.
