Blood cough remedy: what to know

A dry, irritated throat after forceful coughing may need simple supportive care, while a nosebleed needs nosebleed first aid. An airway infection, asthma flare, reflux or Bronchiectasis may need a different clinical plan. Allergic Rhinitis can keep mucus moving into the throat, and Chronic Cough can repeatedly traumatise airway lining. The blood itself is a sign to explain, not a diagnosis; colour and amount do not safely determine a home remedy.

Sit upright, avoid smoking and dusty air, and sip fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Spit out blood so you can observe it, and record when it appears, how much there is, and whether it is mixed with phlegm. If a nosebleed is present, lean forward and pinch the soft nose. Avoid leftover antibiotics, aspirin or other medicine changes unless a clinician has advised them; some products can worsen bleeding or delay the right diagnosis. Arrange prompt medical advice for any unexplained or repeated episode.

Seek emergency help for heavy or continuing blood loss, shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, confusion or blue lips. Get prompt assessment when fever, worsening cough, night sweats, unexplained weight loss or increasing weakness accompanies the blood. Tell the clinician about blood thinners, recent procedures, pregnancy and lung disease.
