Blood cough causes: what should you know?

The mouth, gums, nose, and throat can add blood to saliva that is later cleared with a cough. A forceful cough can irritate small surface vessels. Infections such as a common cold or acute bronchitis may inflame the airway lining. Asthma, bronchiectasis, and chronic cough can also present with blood-streaked mucus and need clinical context. Reflux may trigger throat clearing, while allergic rhinitis may cause nasal drainage. The symptom does not identify one condition on its own.

Record the first episode, recurrence, amount, colour, and whether blood is mixed with mucus. Note fever, breathlessness, wheeze, chest pain, recent illness, injury, smoking, and medicines such as anticoagulants. Arrange prompt medical advice for blood without a clear minor source, even if it stops. Avoid smoking and do not alter prescribed treatment without guidance.

Call emergency services if blood is heavy or persistent, or if you have breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, confusion, or blue lips. Go urgently after chest trauma or with a rapidly worsening illness. If symptoms are mild but recur, arrange timely review so the source can be established.
