Blood coming from the throat: what should you know?

A dry throat, vigorous coughing, a scratched area, gum bleeding, or a nosebleed draining backward can leave blood in saliva. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis may contribute to irritation or repeated throat clearing. Blood mixed with phlegm after a deep cough may instead come from the lower airways; acute bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or chronic cough can be relevant. Looking at the blood cannot reliably identify its origin.

Spit out blood rather than swallowing it, and check gently for bleeding gums or the nose without repeatedly scraping the throat. Arrange medical advice if the cause is unclear, the symptom repeats, or swallowing becomes painful. Tell the clinician about reflux, nasal symptoms, dental problems, cough, fever, smoking, injury, and medicines that affect clotting.

Seek emergency care for ongoing or heavy bleeding, choking, difficulty breathing, chest pain, faintness, confusion, or blue lips. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for rapidly increasing throat swelling, inability to swallow fluids, or bleeding after an injury.

Ask whether your mouth, nose, throat, and chest need separate checks, which symptoms would change the urgency, and whether reflux or nasal drainage could be irritating the area.
