Blood After Sex When It Is Not Your Period

Bleeding can come from irritated or dry vaginal tissue, the cervix, an infection, a small growth such as a polyp, or hormonal changes. An examination can identify where the blood came from and guide treatment.

Friction may cause a small surface injury, particularly when vaginal tissue is dry or sensitive. The cervix can also bleed after contact because of inflammation, cervical ectropion, or a polyp. Sexually transmitted infections may cause bleeding alongside unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when urinating. Hormonal contraception can contribute to irregular spotting.

Bleeding after menopause needs assessment because the vaginal lining may be thin, while changes in the cervix or womb also need to be excluded. Abnormal cervical or womb cells are another possible cause, so persistent or unexplained bleeding should not be self-diagnosed.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist, primary-care clinician, or sexual health clinic. Note when the bleeding happened, its colour and amount, whether it has happened before, and any pain, discharge, missed periods, contraception changes, or new sexual partner. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and tell the clinician the result.

The assessment may include questions about your cycle and medicines, a vaginal and cervical examination, infection testing, a pregnancy test, and confirmation that cervical screening is up to date. Further imaging or examination may be offered according to the findings. Avoid vaginal douching, which can worsen irritation and does not treat the cause.

Seek urgent medical assessment if you have missed a period and have unusual bleeding with lower abdominal or pelvic pain, because an ectopic pregnancy must be ruled out. If you are pregnant, contact your maternity service or urgent-care provider about any vaginal bleeding.

Go to emergency care for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, breathing difficulty, or feeling acutely unwell. Fever, worsening pelvic pain, or foul-smelling discharge also warrants prompt assessment because infection may need treatment.

Ask where the bleeding appears to come from, whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, whether your contraception or other medicines could contribute, and whether your cervix needs closer examination. You can also ask what changes should prompt urgent help and what follow-up is needed if the bleeding happens again.
