What the blocked feeling may mean

Water can remain in the ear canal and make sounds seem muffled. Moisture may also irritate the canal lining, especially after swimming or bathing. Earwax can swell when wet and create pressure, reduced hearing, or ringing. An earache, discharge, or increasing tenderness can point to irritation or infection rather than simple trapped water.

What to do now

Tilt your head with the affected ear facing down and gently pull the outer ear in different directions. Dry the outside with a towel. You can use a hairdryer on its coolest, lowest setting, held well away from the ear. Do not insert cotton buds, fingers, or other objects, and do not pour oil or drops into the ear if you may have a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, pain, or discharge.
