Blocked nose in pregnancy: safe ways to respond

Pregnancy-related changes can make the nasal lining fuller and more sensitive. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing or itching, while a cold can bring sore throat, cough or fever. Facial pain, pressure and altered smell may suggest sinusitis. Nasal blockage can also worsen snoring, so mention disrupted sleep or pauses in breathing to your maternity team.

Try saline spray, a saline rinse made with safe water, or a humidified room. Sleep with your head slightly raised, drink regularly and avoid smoke, dust and strong scents. Do not start decongestant tablets, sprays, herbal products or allergy medication without checking with a pharmacist, midwife or doctor, because suitability depends on your pregnancy and medical history.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, persistent, repeatedly prevent sleep, or occur with fever, worsening facial pain, one-sided blockage or repeated bleeding. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling around the eyes, severe headache, confusion or a marked deterioration in your general health.
