Blocked nose and COVID

A blocked nose may occur alongside a sore throat, cough, fever, tiredness or changes in taste or smell during a viral infection. The symptom alone cannot identify COVID. Allergic rhinitis tends to bring sneezing, an itchy nose or watery eyes, while a common cold often causes runny-nose symptoms. Facial pressure, thick mucus or symptoms that keep returning can fit sinusitis or chronic sinusitis. Nasal blockage may also disturb sleep, especially if you snore or wake gasping.

If COVID is possible, follow current local testing and staying-home guidance, particularly around vulnerable people. Rest, drink fluids and use a saline nasal spray or rinse as directed. Keep the air comfortably humid and avoid smoke. Do not start antibiotics for congestion unless a clinician has identified a bacterial infection. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether a decongestant or allergy treatment is suitable for you.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or inability to stay awake. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, dehydration makes drinking difficult, or congestion is severe and not settling. Ask for assessment sooner if you are pregnant, immunocompromised or have a long-term heart or lung condition.
