Blocked nose with clear mucus: what should you know?

Clear mucus is produced when the nasal lining is irritated or inflamed. Allergic rhinitis often adds sneezing, itchy eyes, and symptoms linked to dust, pets, or seasonal exposure. A common cold may begin with clear discharge and later change as the illness evolves. Dry air, smoke, fragrance, and temperature changes can cause similar mucus. Clear mucus does not rule out sinusitis, and mucus colour alone cannot establish the cause.

Drink normally, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use saline spray to moisten and clear the nose. A saline rinse can help when prepared and used exactly as directed with safe water. Wash hands and avoid sharing towels if an infection seems possible. If symptoms include itching and repeated sneezing, ask a pharmacist about allergy medication. Rest and monitor the overall pattern rather than judging the illness by mucus colour alone.

Seek clinical advice if congestion persists, returns frequently, causes facial pressure, reduces smell, or stays on one side. Urgent assessment is needed for severe breathing difficulty, swelling near the eye, severe headache, confusion, or a serious feverish illness. Mention loud snoring, choking during sleep, or daytime sleepiness if nighttime breathing is affected.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, a cold, or sinus inflammation; how long self-care should be tried; and which medicines are suitable with your health history. Note when the mucus started, possible triggers, facial pain, smell changes, and whether symptoms affect sleep.
