Blocked Nose and Tight Chest: What Should You Know?

A blocked nose may come from a cold, allergy or sinus problem, while a tight chest can indicate narrowed airways and needs prompt assessment if breathing is difficult. These symptoms may occur together during a viral illness or after exposure to an irritant, but the chest symptom should not be explained away as nasal congestion alone. Notice whether the tightness is constant, follows exercise or an exposure, or comes with wheezing, cough or fever.

Nasal congestion is swelling of the lining inside the nose, often with mucus. Allergic rhinitis can cause congestion, sneezing, an itchy nose and watery eyes; house dust mite allergy is one possible trigger. A common cold may add sore throat, cough or tiredness. Sinusitis can cause facial pressure, reduced smell and thick nasal discharge, while longer-lasting sinus symptoms may fit chronic sinusitis.

Tightness in the chest may feel like pressure, constriction or difficulty taking a full breath. It can occur when the airways narrow, including with asthma, or alongside an infection or an allergic reaction. A blocked nose can also make breathing feel uncomfortable, especially when lying down, but it does not by itself account for every cause of chest tightness.

Sit upright and move away from smoke, strong scents, dust or a known allergen. Sip fluids, rest, and use saline nasal spray or a saline rinse prepared with safe water if this is suitable for you. Follow any personal asthma or allergy action plan exactly, including prescribed reliever medicine. Do not start someone else’s inhaler or repeatedly use a decongestant spray without checking the label or asking a pharmacist.

Arrange medical advice if the chest tightness is new, recurring, or not settling, or if nasal symptoms are prolonged or repeatedly disturbing sleep. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, examine your nose and ask about triggers. Allergy medication may help when an allergy pattern is present, but treatment should match the cause.

Call emergency services now if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, have blue or grey lips, feel faint or confused, or develop sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent chest pain, coughing blood, or chest tightness that is rapidly worsening. Do not drive yourself if breathing is severely affected.

Prompt same-day medical advice is appropriate for new wheezing, a high fever with breathing symptoms, or symptoms that began soon after food, medicine or an insect sting. Children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with asthma, heart disease or lung disease should use a lower threshold for seeking help.

Ask what may be triggering both symptoms, whether your breathing needs testing, and which warning signs should prompt emergency help. Tell the clinician when the symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, any fever or wheeze, recent exposures, and every medicine you have used.
