Blocked nose and ear pain: what to know

The nose and middle ear are connected by a narrow pressure-equalising passage. A common cold, allergic rhinitis or sinusitis can swell nearby tissue, creating ear pressure, popping or pain. House dust mite allergy may cause ongoing congestion, while chronic sinusitis can cause symptoms that persist or recur. Obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with nighttime mouth breathing and nasal blockage, but ear pain usually needs a separate ear assessment. Pain with fever, discharge or a tender outer ear changes the picture.

Rest, drink fluids according to your usual needs and use saline spray to clear nasal mucus. Avoid smoke and known allergens. Blow your nose gently, one side at a time. A pharmacist can discuss pain relief and allergy medication based on your age, pregnancy status, health conditions and current medicines. Avoid putting drops or objects into a painful ear unless advised, especially if there is discharge or a history of eardrum problems.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty or confusion. Arrange a medical review for fever, ear discharge, significant hearing change, persistent facial pain, or symptoms that do not improve. The clinician may examine both the nose and ear to choose treatment.
