Suspected blocked milk duct during pregnancy

Pregnancy can make breasts fuller, more sensitive and nodular as glandular tissue develops. A localized change may have several causes that cannot be distinguished reliably by touch alone.

Hormonal changes enlarge milk-making tissue and increase blood flow. Colostrum may leak before birth, but this does not mean the breast needs to be emptied. General heaviness on both sides differs from a new focal lump, hot red patch or sharply localized pain.

If you are breastfeeding another child during pregnancy or recently weaned, restricted milk flow remains possible. Cysts, inflammation, infection and other breast conditions can produce overlapping symptoms, making clinical assessment useful.

Wear a well-fitting supportive bra and use a cool compress over a tender area. Do not deeply massage a lump or repeatedly express the breast in an attempt to unblock it. Antenatal colostrum expression should follow advice from your maternity team because individual pregnancy circumstances matter.

Record when the change began, its location and any redness, warmth, discharge or fever. Ask your maternity clinician which pain relief is suitable during pregnancy rather than starting a medicine or herbal product on your own.

Seek prompt advice for a hot, red or increasingly swollen area, fever, chills, pus-like discharge or feeling generally unwell. Infection can occur during pregnancy even without established breastfeeding.

Arrange an examination for a distinct lump that persists, spontaneous bloody discharge, skin dimpling, a newly inverted nipple or an underarm lump. Pregnancy-related breast changes can make examination harder, but they are not a reason to postpone assessment.

Ask whether the change fits normal pregnancy physiology or needs breast imaging, what comfort options are safe for your pregnancy, and whether expressing colostrum is appropriate for you. Mention any current breastfeeding and previous breast surgery or mastitis.
