Blocked nose treatment at home: what should you know?

Short answer
Home care for a blocked nose includes saline, fluids, humidified air and avoiding irritants, while persistent or severe symptoms need clinical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Simple option
- Saline spray or rinse used as directed
- Avoid
- Smoke, irritants and prolonged decongestant-spray use
What may be causing it
Nasal congestion happens when the lining of the nose becomes swollen or produces extra mucus. A Common Cold often causes temporary blockage, while Allergic Rhinitis may bring sneezing, itching and watery discharge. Sinusitis can add facial pressure, reduced smell or thick mucus. Recurrent symptoms may be related to House Dust Mite Allergy or Chronic Sinusitis. Mouth breathing at night and loud snoring can also accompany Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, which needs assessment rather than relying on home treatment alone.
Home measures that may help
Use a sterile saline spray or rinse as directed, and clean any reusable device carefully. Drink fluids and consider a humidifier if the air is dry. Keep away from smoke, strong scents and known allergens. Rest with your head slightly raised if congestion is worse at night. Ask a pharmacist whether Allergy Medication is suitable, especially if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, glaucoma or take other medicines. Do not use a decongestant spray for longer than its label advises, because overuse can worsen blockage.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if blockage lasts beyond a usual cold, keeps returning, affects sleep or breathing, or occurs mainly on one side. Seek prompt care for high fever, severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, repeated nosebleeds, confusion or worsening illness. Get emergency help for major breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern suggest allergy, sinusitis or another cause? Is a saline rinse appropriate for me? Which nasal medicine is safe with my conditions and current medicines? How long should I try home care?
