Bloating stomach during pregnancy: what should you know?

Short answer
Bloating during pregnancy is commonly caused by hormonal changes and slower digestion, but severe, persistent or unusual symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why it happens
- Hormones slow digestion and the growing uterus changes abdominal space
- First steps
- Smaller meals, fluids, gradual fibre and gentle movement
Why pregnancy can cause bloating
Pregnancy hormones relax the muscles of the digestive tract, so food may move more slowly and gas can build up. As the uterus grows, it can also reduce room for the bowel, making fullness, belching or constipation more noticeable. Bloating itself does not show whether a pregnancy is progressing normally. It may overlap with Food Intolerance, lactose intolerance, Coeliac Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, particularly when symptoms began before pregnancy or include ongoing diarrhoea.
Gentle measures
Try smaller meals spaced through the day, eat slowly and drink fluids regularly. Gentle walking can support bowel movement. Include fibre gradually from foods you tolerate, since a sudden change may increase gas. Avoid foods that clearly trigger symptoms, but do not begin a restrictive diet or use laxatives, herbal products or over-the-counter medicines without checking with your maternity clinician or pharmacist. Ask about Nutrition Counselling if symptoms are making it difficult to eat a varied diet.
When to contact your maternity team
Contact your maternity team promptly for persistent vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fever, painful urination, vaginal bleeding, fluid loss, regular tightening, severe abdominal pain or pain focused on one side. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulty or severe pain. New severe symptoms should not be attributed to ordinary pregnancy bloating without assessment.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Is my pattern consistent with pregnancy-related digestion changes? Which medicines are suitable for constipation or gas at my stage of pregnancy? Should I change any foods? What symptoms should prompt same-day advice?
