Bloating on one side of the abdomen

Gas or constipation can collect unevenly, making one area feel fuller before it shifts after passing stool or gas. Irritable Bowel Syndrome may cause bloating that changes location. A fixed lump, persistent one-sided swelling or significant pain needs examination because symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Observe the exact side, tenderness, timing, food links and whether fullness changes after passing stool or gas. Keep fluids steady, walk gently if comfortable, and avoid repeatedly pressing the area. Seek urgent care for sudden severe or steadily worsening pain, a rigid or rapidly enlarging abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, blood or black stool, fever with marked weakness, or yellow skin or eyes. Urgent assessment is also needed for a painful swelling, especially if it appears after lifting or cannot be gently reduced.
